Guimarães is a Portuguese city located northeast of Porto, in the sub-region of Ave (one of the most industrialised sub-regions in the country). It has a population of 52 182 inhabitants. It is one of the most important historical cities in the country, which played a crucial part in the foundation of Portugal as a country. Therefore, it is often named as the “Cradle-City” of Portugal. It has existed for a millennium since it was founded, known then as Vimaranes. Since the end of 2001 the city centre has been recognized by UNESCO a Cultural Heritage of Humanity, making it one of the biggest tourism centres in the region. Its streets and monuments breathe history and charm visitors. Recently, in 2023, the Cultural Heritage of Humanity Recognition was extended to the industrial remains of its leather factories (Zona de Couros). Guimarães has known how to best reconcile history and heritage conservation with the dynamics and entrepreneurship, traits of a contemporary city.
